Employment opportunity
The new Wal-Mart store on Mercury Drive in Dearborn will open its door in March. Wal-Mart human resource staffers are currently at the ACCESS Dearborn Service Center, 6451 Schaefer Road, in Dearborn, Mondays-Fridays (9 a.m.- 5 p.m.) through February 4, taking applications and interviewing candidates for the 550-600 available positions in all departments (e.g., sales, cashiers, warehouse, janitorial, and administration).The store will have three shifts. Free cribs available
Wayne County Department of Public Health’s Operation Safe Sleep program is offering low-income Wayne County moms with infants 9 months of age or younger, FREE "pack and play" cribs!  In addition to the crib, they are providing blankets, safe-sleep education for parents, and referrals for other resources (i.e., health care, etc.).  For more info., call (313) 732-7951. Free flu shots available
The Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion will offer flu shots at various locations in Detroit now through Thursday, December 6Local residents, particularly those considered high priority for getting flu shots, are urged to get their vaccinations as soon as possible.  The cost for the vaccine is $10 for those who do not have Medicaid or Medicare (Part B). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people at high risk for serious flu complications include: children from six months to age five, pregnant women, individuals ages 50 and older, individuals of any age with chronic medical conditions, such as asthma and diabetes, and individuals who live with or care for persons at high risk.  For information about the location nearest you, call the Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion's Immunization program at (313) 876-4334.

FREE Adult Education Programs
St. Vincent & Sarah Fisher Center at Christ the King School (16800 Trinity - located at the corner of Grant River and Burt Road). Orientation & enrollment GED tutoring: Tuesdays, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. GED classes: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, & Thursdays at 10am a.m.-noon & 1-3 p.m.  For individuals who have not attended school in the past year and wish to make the commitment to attend a weekly group class that will assist them in preparing for a GED prep course.  Childcare is provided, and "walk ins" are welcome.  For more info, call Steve @ 535-9200, ext. 3103; or Sharon @ 535-9200, ext. 3102.

FREE smoke detectors still available!
Detroit Children's Hospital Injury Prevention Program is providing smoke detectors, by appointment. For Detroit, Highland Park & Hamtramck residents only. (No income requirements.) Just call 313-745-0072 and a representative will come to a home and install at least three detectors.

Facing foreclosure?
If you — or someone you know — is a homeowner in danger of losing their house through foreclosure, help may be a click or phone call away.  The Michigan State Housing Development Authority’s (MSHDA) Save the Dream program info can be found on the Internet through their homepage at http://www.michigan.gov/mshda/ or by calling (toll-free) 866/946-7432.

TRIO Educational Opportunity Center @ Wayne State University
Dreaming of pursuing a post-secondary education??? This federally-funded, comprehensive counseling program based at WSU may be able to help.  If you are a low-income Detroit resident, at least 19 years old, the first generation in your family to attend college, and are in need of FREE academic, vocational, career and financial aid services to remain in school, call Project Director Delta Saulsberry at 577-5050 for more information, or visit http://sdcl.wayne.edu/access/Eoc.

Help with utility bills and prescription drugs
The Heat & Warmth (THAW) Fund:  DTE Energy customers who meet the guidelines (see http://my.dteenergy.com/paymentOptions/eligibility.html), are in shut-off status, and have exhausted all federal and state funding programs, may be eligible for assistance.  For assistance, contact on of the following administrators: United way (dail 211); for cell phone users, 800-552-1183; or THAW directly at 800-866-8429..

Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is federal money given to each state to assist low-income families with energy costs.  In Michigan, the LIHEAP block grant is used for the following programs: Home Heating Credit; State Emergency Relief (SER); and Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP).  For more information about LIHEAP, call the toll free DHS Energy Hotline at (toll free) 1-800-292-5650 between the hours of 8-11:45 a.m. and 1-4:15 p.m. or visit http://www.michigan.gov/dhs/0,1607,7-124-5453_5531-15420--,00.html on the web.

If you cannot afford prescription drugs, you do not have to pay for information about patient assistance programs that provide free drugs to those who qualify.  There are free resources available.  Ask your doctor or other health care provider about free drug programs.  Your doctor's office may have information or can explain how you can get information.  Consumers may also contact the Partnership for Prescription Assistance (PPA).  PPA is a partnership of drug companies, doctors, health care providers, patient advocacy organizations, and community groups who have combined their resources to help qualifying uninsured consumers get free medicine from various public and private patient assistance programs.  PPA is a one-stop shopping concept that offers consumers access to more than 275 public and private patient assistance programs, including more than 150 programs offered by pharmaceutical companies.  To contact PPA, consumers may call (toll free) 1-888-477-2669, or visit the PPA Web site at www.pparx.org.

The MiRx (My Prescription) Card is a new prescription drug discount program for Michigan residents who do not have any prescription drug coverage.  The MiRx Card program is free.  There is no cost for the card OR to enroll in the program.  And, the MiRx card is easy to use.  MiRx card holders will take their prescription and their MiRx card to their local participating pharmacy.  The pharmacist will fill the prescription and charge the MiRx discounted price.  The discount is good on any medicine the pharmacist stocks and your doctor prescribes.  Over-the-counter drugs are not covered even if they are prescribed by your doctor.  Call the MiRx Hotline at 1-800-259-8016.

 "No Worker Left Behind" Tuition-Free Program
Starting this month, this new program (open to all eligible Michigan residents) will assist individuals to gain skilled employment and will provide free tuition for up to two years (at $5,000/per year) for a total of $10,000to complete an approved educational (Associates, Bachelor , Masters) degree or occupation certificate.
To be eligible to apply a person must be ... 
1. Unemployed or being laid off
2. At least 18 years old
3. Did not graduated from high school within the past 2 years and NOT be a full-time college student
4. Be a member of an annual family income with less than $40,000
5. Participants must complete a skills assessment administered at a Michigan Works Agency office.
Participants will receive up to $5,000 per year (for a total of $10,000 per person for two years) to pursue an associate’s degree or occupational certificate in (1) a high-demand field; (2) emerging industry; or (3) entrepreneurship program. Tuition for the completion of a bachelor’s or even Master’s program is allowable if the program meets all other criteria (i.e., two years or less is needed to complete; and will lead to a job in an high-demand, emerging sector, and/or entrepreneurial endeavor), if at a Michigan community college, university, or other approved training program.  For more information, contact the Michigan Works! Help for seniors struggling with prescription costs
The City of Detroit Senior Citizens Department is working with the Detroit Area Agency on Aging to assist senior citizens with getting help to pay for prescription drugs through the federal program, Operation Extra Help. Designed to help seniors 65 years old or older, the disabled, or those who have Medicare and no other supplementary insurance that pays their prescription drug cost, this program expires on Monday, Dec. 31, 2007. There are some income requirements. Seniors may call 224-5444 to complete their application over the telephone.
